Verizon could have had the iPhone first

According to an article on the tech page of USA Today, Verizon had first dibs on the iPhone but rejected it due to control of distribution, customer service, and probably the 1% of fees to Apple for every iPhone on the Verizon network. It's a shame since I'm a Verizon user and it's a great network. Maybe someday in 2008/2009, we'll be able to get our hands on one.
