Jobs: "“You don’t want your phone to be like a PC"

I'm not too sure about this. As I mentioned, I am a Motorola Q user on Verizon and like the fact that I can add software to the phone that I choose. If I don't like the browser or want additional features, there is Opera. If I want a better multimedia player, I can use Core Player. If I want to quit smoking, there is My Last Cigarette for multiple smartphone platforms. I really see this as a great feature of the smartphone. It doesn't make it a PC, it makes it more desirable and more useful.

I can understand Apple not wanting to add a browser other than Safari or different email or multimedia player, but there are a ton of applications that are very useful and will not bring down the West Coast Cingular network.

No third party applications

Gizmodo reports that they had discussions with Apple's VP of Applications, Eddie Cue, and Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller. Iniitially, the iPhone will not suport Third Party Applications because it's not really OS X, just a stripped down version. No external memory, replacable battery, or wireless sync either. It's a first generation product so who knows, maybe rev two will address these issues. I'm down on the excitement scale now.

I named my site iPhoneAPPS because I thought that there would be a great opportunity for add on applications to the iPhone. Now to learn that the first version is CLOSED!!!!!! It hurts a bit. Makes me want to scream.....

Of course my other phone sites will keep me busy. See the bottom of the page the other websites in my EMPIRE.

Video Demo of iPhone - close up.

This is an outstanding demo of the main features of the new iPhone on YouTube from CBS news. I was feeling that I can wait for this phone for a while, but, after seeing this demo, my desire to have it way up again. Check out the picture zoom feature towards the end of the video.

I was also wondering how the finger flick interface would work.. well, it seems that it works very well. Just as you would expect from Apple.

How to keep a secret.

Apple did a great job keeping the specifications and technology of the iPhone a secret. For over two years there have been rumors and fanboy photos but no real details. There were rumor of the widescreen iPod without a click wheel and tablet macbook but they weren't announced. When you think of the number of people and companies working on this phone, it's pretty amazing that no details were leaked. Kudo's top Apple on keeping this secret. Maybe Congress could learn a thing or two about stopping leaks from Apple.

iPhone Tech Specs on Gizmodo

The detailed technical specs are posted on Gizmodo. The official Apple Inc. press release is also shown on this site. They don't have prices for the iPhone/Cingular service yet, but promise to announce them prior to the June launch.

The things I learned here are:

- the screen is 320 x 480 at 116 ppi (pixels per inch). This is roughly double the size of the Q, Dash, and Blackjack with a higher ppi.
- Actucal dimensions .46 inches thin and 4.8 ounces light.
- 15 hours of audio playback, which is longer than my 1st generation Nano.
- More detail on the sensors in the phone... ie: the screen turns off when you hold it to your ear to save power.

Some things I wish that I learned are:
- Can you add third party applications to the phone?
- It says that it supports all the iPod content including... everything except the 5G games.
- Navigating through songs is done with a flick of a finger... I'm used to my finger going in circles to navigate. It would be nice to have a virtual, on-screen click wheel as an option.
- Cigular is the exclusive partner for the iPhone, but for how long? I still have 18 months left on my Verizon contract.

I still think the iPhone is amazing, but I'm becoming less convinced that it's worth the price to be an early adopter.

What does Wall Street think of the iPhone

I think they like it. Unlike MacWorld and their 10 million estimate, CNBC thought that 13 Million units in 2008 may be far too low. Can you say $6 Billion dollars in sales?

Reinvent the Phone? 10 Million units in 2008?

Are people jumping to conclusions about the iPhone? MacWorld calls it a wake up call for the phone industry. I know I think its just totally great right now, but, time will tell. Some questions that come to mind are:
  • Will I be able to get one?
  • How will Cingular/at&t handle the release and support?
  • It had a great demo, but how will people like it when it's in their hands?

  • Can I live without a keyboard with my fat fingers?

  • Will it work well when not in WiFi range?

  • Can I install my own applications on it?

  • $500-$600 is alot of money for a phone. I already have an iPod and smart phone now. Is it worth it?

For the most part, I was immediately amazed at the phone. I currently use a Motorola Q on Verizon and love it. Do I love it due to the great Verizon coverage, EDVO speed, and wide range of third party software or just the coolness of the Q? Remember, the phone has to work and be functional.
