Seventy four days out from launch, Apple has has sold 1 million iPhones. Does that mean they're giving back at least $100 million in store credits? Assuming a markup of 50% for their hardware and accessories and 80% for Software, it's not that much of a hit as people may think. I suspect that many people will be using the credit to but a new macbook, mac mini or iMac. If you have the iPhone, you won't "need" the iPod Touch or new iPod nano and at $500 the mac mini looks awful nice considering you can dual boot with Boot Camp.

Anyone who bought the phone in the past two weeks, get's $200 CREDIT at apple store. Otherwise, you get $100 credit at the store. Not money in your pocket but it is the right thing to do. Apple doesn't say they were totally wrong, but partially wrong and had bad timing. I guess they should have brought it out at $399 to avoid everything. Maybe they didn't have the inventory or wanted to wait to see what the demand would be. Now that they've ramped up manufacturing for the Holiday Season, they can increase demand for the iPhone through a price cut.
In Summary, 1: $399 is the right price point, 2: Prices always go down, don't complain, 3: Mea Culpa to our Apple Fans.
Read the whole memo here.
The end is the "quasi"-mea culpa.
Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.
We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

The third one is for the enormous roaming charges for the iPhone while in Europe. The first two deal with the sealed battery and related charges. Want to bet that the FOURTH class action suit deals with $200 price cut.

You may be asking yourself where is Mail, Weather, Google Maps or Stocks in the new iPod touch. The answer: they are coming, but probably not from Apple. The iPod runs Mac OS X like the iPhone does and we have got unofficial word from inside Apple that it runs exactly the same applications. The exact quote: "they use the same damn binaries."

Update: Apple is ALL EARS about their iPhone. Let them know how you feel about it at: iphone/share
Lowering the price by ONE THIRD less than TWO Months after you release a highly anticipated product!!!!! How fast can you say CLASS ACTION SUIT. I'm not a person who's first thought is to sue, but in this case, I'm PISSED. Yes I was thrilled over the past month with my iPhone and I do like the device, but I lost a third of my investment in 1 month!!! Had I waited, I'd still have my Q on Verizon and get a iPod Touch for $300-$400 with wifi and safari.
Quick Summary. iPhone Ringtones, New Red Shuffle, new fat Nano, IPod Classic in 80($250)/160G($350)B sizes, IPod Touch with WiFi 8GB($300)/16GB($400), iTunes Wifi music store, all new iPod touch stuff will be on the iPhone this month, free WiFi access to the iTunes store and any one of the 20 billion Starbucks locations, PRICE DROP ON THE iPhone 8GB to $399 See them all at engadget.
One milliion current iPhone owners are going to be pissed. I'm having some SERIOUS buyers remorse. I would have kept my great Verizon service and got the iPod Touch had I waited. I'm sure there will be plenty of other people feeling this way, especially with the $200 price (or 1/3rd) cut less than 2 months after first shipments.
Anyway, here are the pix...

In less than two-months time, a persistent and merry band of iPhone hackers have been pushing out application after killer application for the iPhone, and hacking your iPhone to install those applications has become dead simple. Is this going to open everyone to Viruses? I'm not going to make the jump for a while on this. Maybe Apple will announce something tomorrow.

Last week, Apple sent out invitations for a media event on September 5th, 2007. The invitations pictured Apple's Cover Flow interface as well as a scene from the Mi Swing Es Tropical iPod ad. The caption on the invite reads "The beat goes on." Based on this alone, it seems clear that Apple w...

From "lg", the same guy who brought you Installer.app, comes this new iPhone hack that lets you load as many icons as you want onto your iPhone home screen. It's still a little buggy but I have 32 applications loaded onto my screen right now and I can just flick my way to the one I want, even if the one I want is that baffling Magenta

"When I first walked into the house the day I bought my iPhone, I had a moment of panic. After six months of media frenzy and amongst all of the excitement, I had lost sight of the fact that the 8GB iPhone I bought at a nearby AT&T store had set me back $600. Not that I hadn't been warned; the price information was everywhere..."

Now that Apple has invited select media to the a press event which will take place on September 5th, 2007, it seems clear that Apple's iPods will finally see updates. While we typically steer clear of mock-ups of upcoming Apple devices, in the months leading into this event, there have been a num...

AT&T lawyers are on the job...Until an assessment is made of the potential of legal action, Uniquephones is unable to release the unlocking software for sale. The company spokesperson also said that the company would also be evaluating what to eventually do with the software should they be legally denied the right to sell it.

It was bound to happen: AT&T is going after the commercial snakes groups trying to profit from the iPhone unlocking. Apparently they can hunt these mercenaries down. You can still 100% unlock with the TurboSIM method but, once again, there is only one way to really blow up the Death Star: Support the iPhone Dev Team to get the FREE software unlock.

Now in beta... iPhoneYelp is an iPhone specific version of Yelp!. Yelp provides user submitted reviews for a variety of categories including restaurants, theaters, bars and much, much more. This version provides a Google Map view or a List view of the search results for a City or Neighborhood. To use, select a city and neighborhood, enter a search term, then press Map View or List View to see the results. Results are returned in the Highest User Rated order.
It's still in beta so you may have to hit the search button twice when you land on the Map or List page. Still working on it but it's somewhat useful in it's present form. I used the Google MAP API and Yelp API and formatted it for the iPhone.

On average, the iPhone is about 80x slower than an iMac when doing very low level benchmarks natively on the phone. There is also a comparison between running an application written in Javascript to be run on a web site versus running a native application using the "hacker" tools for the iPhone. This shouts out to Apple to release an iPhone SDK sometime soon.
Sources at retailers are continuing to tell us that Apple is slowing down iPod shipments, strongly suggesting the company is running out its current stock to make room on shelves for new product.

"The iPod is a locked down device when it comes to easily adding software. you’ll know that with some trickery (ok, a lot of trickery) you can do things like install Linux on the iPod, and customize the interface somewhat. But all of these changes are hacks, outside the purview of the typical Apple consumer. Which leads us to the iPhone."

Thanks for the nice review of iPhoneAtom. This site has screenshots running on an actual iPhone. From the review:
A click on any category will lead to the latest headlines still in plain text format. Clicking a headline will lead you directly to the website the news was taken from. Because of the nature of feeds, load time is fairly quick since it’s text based. I assume since this is designed specifically for the iPhone - it will only lead users to iPhone compatible sites without the bells and whistles of flash enabled sites.

Download Squad digs into iTunes software code and discovers evidence that games are coming for the iPhone!
It's only in the UK iTunes video store and embedded in the code.

Could be interesting. I don't think the phone is a good platform for traditional "MAME" type games due to the lack of buttons and joystick. Games like Big Brain Academy on the Nintendo DS may work fairly well. The tilt sensor may bring a new type of game to the iPhone as well.
UPDATE: Someone ported NES to the iPhone. Video here:

Wow, I must have been dugg by someone or more people got iPhones. Of course the stats could be wrong. I went from a few hundred hits a day to over 6000 today. Thanks everyone. I am in the midst of another iPhone designed program that I hope is just as successful. You can hit the Feed Reader Tab on the main menu to check it out but you'll need to do it on an iPhone or use the Apple Safari 3.0 beta.
Don't forget to hit the ads and buy from the iPhone store!
Google Code has now the first third-party native application ever for the iPhone. A real, full-fledged iPhone application with a graphic user interface and its own icon in the iPhone home screen. Yes, this is not a Web 2.0 app but the Real Thing™, as you can see in the picture and in the video demonstration.
