iPhone v1.0 Bugs

68 reproducible iPhone bugs.

Many trivial UI issues that are reported. They may be inconsistent with user expectations, but not a big deal. I counted a few application crashes/hangs that should be addressed.

Sometimes you may want to wait for release 1.1 of a new technology but I don't think this list should prevent anyone from getting an iPhone.

Tons of iPhone apps with a slick interface

This site is awesome if you have an iPhone. I counted 150 apps, and it looks perfect on the iPhone. This can also provide some good ideas and sample code for new applications. It's amazing that over 150 apps have been put up on the web in about 15 days.

iPhone Buyers Have No Regrets..."Overwhelmingly Happy"

Early iPhone owners are overwhelmingly happy with their devices...In one of the first such studies, 90% of 200 owners said they were "extremely" or "very" satisfied with their phone. And 85% said they are "extremely" or "very" likely to recommend the device to others.

One quote from the article really surprised me...

The iPhone is extending Apple's reach, the survey says. Three of 10 buyers were first-time Apple customers. For 40%, iPhone is their first iPod.

First iPod for 40% of the purchasers??? That seems very, very high. It seems high because early adopters of technology seem to jump on things very quickly after release, especially when the media buzz is high. 40% have waited over 6 years to buy their first iPod?

iPhone a True Threat to Windows Mobile

Apple is threatening to change the rules of the mobile handset game. "Microsoft's overwhelmingly dominant position in the desktop OS market has let it go ahead with proprietary systems and formats time and time again, keeping users locked in without being too obvious about it"

I'm a Motorola Q owner and still love the phone. I think the iPhone is very slick and would love to have one but there are several things I would give up.

  • Verizon Service and EVDO data network - I never have a problem with Verizon or getting very speedy data connections over EVDO.
  • PDAnet for Smartphone - With this wonderful tool, I can use the Q phone as a EVDO modem through a USB connection and Bluetooth connection (Bluetooth doens't work on Vista Yet).
  • Keyboard - The iPhone soft keyboard is nice and has some very smart features, but I do like the click feeling and the thumb typing ability.
  • Battery - I have two regular batteries and one extended battery. It's easy to change myself too.
  • NATIVE APPLICATIONS! - Readily available with plenty of options, competition and free trial software. There is also plenty of free stuff like themes, ringtones, etc. all over the internet.

I think it will be a while until Apply poses a real threat to Windows Mobile. It will have to get less expensive, more widely available on other providers and address the shortcomings I mention above.

    Even more apps...Appmark

Another site aggregator that allows you to collect your own favorites to be stored on their site. It brings the concept of "appmarks" or push button links to your favorites in a single page. There is a very easy interface for developer to add their websites as an "appmark". Check out the my link to add this site as an appmark.

The results of the barcamp for the iPhone are in and I must say there was alot of fine work done at the camp. The results are 47 web based applications of varying quality and usefulness. At the top of the list is Appleopolis.com, that is yet another list of web based applications. I'll be adding this site to the list once I get back to my mac mini to create the required artwork for submitting an application/website.

Help Build the Ultimate iPhone Feature Request List; Continuously Updated

We invite you to add your ideas in the comments, and we ’ll add the ones we think are the best to the master list. (And if anything we bring up here actually is already possible in the iPhone, please let us know. We don’t claim to be iPhone experts yet). The list will be updated periodically as we continue to test the iPhone.

What a great list that people come up with. Many seem very reasonable and should be in a future release of the iPhone software... BTW: How will the software be updated? Automatically? Get an email notice to update?

    Cases, Cases, Cases....

Apple iPhone cases from $34 to $15. What surprises me is that there are only 24 on the Apple iPhone Store site. In fact, there are only about 41 products there. I thought there would be thousands and thousands of accessories available.

First report of an iPhone crash

This was written about on msnbc but the JOEyGADGET site has more detail. Joe shows what he went through, how he tried to fix the phone, check out the iPhone Support FAQ and finally got a replacement at the Apple Store. An issue that he saw prior to his problem was the the iPhone felt very hot to the touch since he got it. This could be a big problem if it's with the battery since it is not user-replacable.

Ten Reasons Why You Shouldn't Buy an iPhone

A good summary that you should think about before getting your own iPhone. The expense, AT&T and one that I didn't think of, the $175 termination fee if you decide to break the commitment with AT&T. I wonder if the iPhone 2.0 will be out on another provider?

    Introducing Snap Shots from Snap.com

I just installed a nice little tool on this site called Snap Shots that enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, MySpace profiles, IMDb profiles and Amazon products, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, stock charts and more.

Sometimes Snap Shots bring you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you "look ahead," before deciding if you want to follow a link or not.

Should you decide this is not for you, just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and opt-out.

Glitches? Not really. 2 out of 11 people polled.

Reuters is stating that there may be glitches with the iPhone. I don't think so. It's really with iTunes and the inability to activate the phone. I already blogged with the method to install iTunes 7.3 on Vista. Maybe this is really the culprit and not really any problem with the iPhone, except people absolutely loving theirs. As stated in the article:

"It's not like it's a computer, it's not like it's a phone, it's like a living sculpture in my hands," said Dale Larson, a mobile business consultant in San Francisco.

If you're having problems installing iTunes on Vista, check out this link:

    Lucky....

To the cheers of the crowd, people walked the gauntlet with their brand new iPhones in NYC. I think it's kind of over the top, especially since these people are probably heading to the subway where I'd probably hide the box.

The interesting item in this link is that some people just strolled up at 7:15pm, walked in, bought the phone without a wait. I guess they had quite the inventory in NYC.

I just checked eBay and there are 661 items found for iphone in Cell Phones ranging from $15,500.01 down to about $624 for a 4GB version, $850 for a 8GB version. I suspect that you'd be better off taking a ride tomorrow to the local AT&T store to see what's availabe first.

    Vista, iTunes 7.3 and VBScript...

So you just got that new iPhone thing, sped home, downloaded iTunes 7.3 and installed on your new Vista machine (after all, if you're a techie like me, you need to run the latest and greatest on the best hardware). But you run into a problem. VBScript isn't installed by default by Vista.

Oh NO!!! how do I get around this and start using my wonderful new iPhone?????
Apple has already seen it with iTunes 7.2 on Windows XP. For Vista, there are a few more steps you need to do first.

Re-enabling the VBScript engine in Windows XP

If the VBScript is installed, it might not be registered within Windows XP. To re-enable the VBScript engine, follow these steps:

    - click the Start Orb
    - select All Programs
    - select Accessories
    - Right CLICK (very important) on Command Prompt
    - Select Run As Administrator
    - Follow the steps below...

On the Start menu, click Run.
In the "Open" field, enter the following command and click OK.
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll
A message should appear stating that the "DllRegisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbscript.dll succeeded."
Click OK and try installing iTunes or QuickTime again.
Note that the user needs to be logged in as the administrator or is a user with admin privileges for the step above.

You should see something like this when done.

When you load iTunes, you'll need to unblock the firewall.

Once this is done, go to Edit/Preference and setup you're iPhone stuff.

That should do it. Enjoy your new phone.

MOBI Site - Good for the iPhone?

dot mobi sites are a new Top Level Domain (TLD) that is geared towards mobile devices. If you want to test out my blog on your shiny new iPhone... check out http://www.iphoneapps.mobi.

I know that the iPhone has a great browser and .mobi may not be necessary, but not everyone has a cool new phone yet. The advantage is that .mobi sites would not have to be zoomed and are made specifically small with small images. If you're on the "blazingly fast" EDGE network, maybe smaller web pages designed specifically for mobile networks would make sense.

AT&T Stores Brace For Violent iPhone Shoppers

If you plan on stomping over other customers to get your iPhone fix, prepare to work your way through beefed up security and extra employees on hand to stop iPhone insanity. Violent shoppers!!! Maybe people who are crying or begging if they don't get an iPhone, but I hope it doesn't come down to violence. I suspect you'll be able to get one tomorrow if you just stroll over to a local AT&T store.
